Join us for an innovative workshop designed to deepen your understanding of respiration mechanics and their vital role in optimizing breath mechanics, rib and rib cage mobility and diaphragm position and dexterity. This session will explore the concept of the “athletic stack” and axial decompression to enhance performance and body awareness. Participants will engage in practical exercises on both the mat and reformer, utilizing Pilates principles to develop a strong foundation for core control.
Course Outline:
I. Introduction (15 minutes)
Welcome and overview of workshop objectives
Introduction to key concepts: respiration mechanics, transverse abdominus, pelvic floor, athletic stack, and axial decompression.
Discussion of how to use diaphragms as assessment and alignment framework
Discussion on how each exercise will be an assessment tool. Corrections will be done in real time through curing and manual cues. Secondly if those corrections prove unsuccessful, exercises or mobility techniques will be introduced to address limitations.
II. Understanding Respiration Mechanics
* Anatomy and function of the respiratory system and its general impact on core stability.
* How posture affects respiratory mechanics, which include diaphragm position and rib mobility.
* Individual rib and rib cage mobility will be defined in detail, assessment strategies and manual, verbal, and movement corrections will be prescribed based on assessment.
* Overview of the diaphragm, transverse abdominis and pelvic floor anatomy.
* Fascial lines will be named and addressed.
* Tools to assess and facilitate TVA function, capacity to axial decompression and how diaphragmatic position and function relate to TVA function and abdominal recruitment.
IV. Mat Exercises (30 minutes)
1. Breathing exericses
2. Eccentric situp over over ball or bumpy ball to teach axial decompression and how position of the diaphragm and axial decompression lead to the automatic recruitment of TVA as opposed to volitional recruitment of the TVA.
3. Eccentric psoas exercise on the Yoga Block
4. Side Leg Series and how unilateral axial decompression can be resourced
5. Spine Stretch Forward: Incorporating breath to deepen spinal articulation and core engagement.
6. Roll Up: Using breath to initiate movement and stabilize the core.
V. Reformer Exercises (30 minutes)
Explore how serratus to external oblique, axial decompression and hip differentiation can set an integrated core paradigm that can be applied anywhere. We will use the following exercises to increase ideal rib cage and pelvis position.
1. Neurological prep exercises
2. Long Spine Elephant
3. Kneeling Knee Stretch Variations
4. Standing Front/Splits, added rotation
5. Supine Leg in Straps to Long Spine Stretch and Short Spine
6. Classic Semi-circle and then legs in straps
VI. Integration and Application (10 minutes)
1. Discuss how to integrate these principles and exercises into personal practice or teaching
2. Q&A session for clarifications and sharing insights
Join us in this transformative workshop to enhance your practice, improve your understanding of core dynamics, and empower your clients with effective breath and core control techniques!
